“Woke up got outta bed, dragged a comb across my head”…. or so the song goes – and the routine begins, for them, those 9-5ers….

I do not have a daily routine. I no longer need one. I do however have habits on which I focus every day. Habits I enjoy, habits I look forward to, and habits that make me happy – mental and physical exercise, writing, reading, researching, establishing new connections with people, and building upon existing relationships.

It just so happens that these habits are mirrored perfectly within my chosen career. This is why I enjoy every day and coupled with the obligatory request to the Gods of Well Control that today, nobody gets hurt and nothing gets damaged or goes on fire, we set about our business of solving oilfield mysteries and generally making miracles happen.

What does a typical day look like? Define typical. This is the oilfield. Typical is not the drill.

This business is not for the faint hearted. It’s for committed professionals with the desire to pit man against machine against mother nature and come out on top every time – altijd, jeden tag, chaque jour de la semaine – with the drive to make a difference and deliver superior results. One of my colleagues, Ronnie Van Der Velde, proclaimed one day; “You can believe in the church, but in the oilfield you better be 100% sure, boy!” Wise words indeed!

In reality our lives are no different from the 9-5ers, minus the routine. Sure, the details are different, the circumstances are different, but we all have the same 24 hours in a day. We all have one life to live and that life is passing by one day at a time. The only real difference lies within the decisions we make and the actions we take – so grip it and rip it. Why not?

Muhammad Ali had it right when he said: – “Don’t count the days, make the days count!” – I’m wondering if Ali was in fact a Snubber in a previous life??
